Culture Night
Come to Culture Night (and sorry for the mess!). Nuuk Art Museum is currently undergoing a major re-curating, but we couldn’t resist opening up a little on Culture Night. We’re open with free entrance on Saturday, January 18th from 1-9pm in the museum shop and in the exhibition “Melting Barriacades”. There will be coffee/tea/juice and cookies.
And some prizes! Nuuk Art Museum will celebrate it’s 20th anniversary in May 2025, and we’re celebrating from early on! Every 20th guest who visits the museum on Culture Night will receive an art calendar for 2025 with artworks from the summer 2024 exhibition “Illoqarfik”. Come to the museum 1-9pm! – and look forward to spring when the museum’s anniversary celebration takes off.
About the exhibition:
Wearing uniforms, driving a personnel carrier, using megaphones and with a military tent, Major General Kaali Kristiansen and Lieutenant Colonel Karius Kristiansen proclaimed the establishment of the Greenlandic military back in 2004. The volunteers for the army were measured and weighed, and asked about their abilities in dog sledding, boating and snowmobiling, and whether they had caught seals, reindeer or polar bears…
It was part of the art project “Melting Barricades” by Inuk Silis Høegh and Asmund Havsteen-Mikkelsen, who played the roles of Major General and Lieutenant Colonel. The art project was acquired by Nuuk Art Museum in 2024 with funding from the Augustinusfonden.
